8-32: Indian Beef Casserole

8-32: Indian Beef Casserole is an affront to Indian cooking worldwide. It is a dish that barely any Indian people would actually eat because it contains beef! ?

During my brief trip to India, I actually ate some beef served by the hotel which was spiced similar to this dish. This hotel served beef because it hosted a lot of travelers from USA and Europe who usually eat beef. Indian culture perceives the cow as sacred and a significant portion of the population observes a vegetarian diet. ??

We had most of the spices for this dish in the house already. We bought the sambal paste specifically for this recipe, but I have found many reasons to use it. I put it in any dish where I want to add great chili flavor without being too overpowering.

Lots of exotic ingredients in this dish. I was short on the recommended amount of beef, so I cut my meat very thinly to stretch it out.

I diced some onion and garlic and got ready to slice the beef.

After slicing the beef, I put the onion and beef into a bowl to start mixing in more ingredients.

Add some curry powder, sambal paste, salt, and nutmeg into the bowl and mix thoroughly.

Next, I added the Aji-Mirin and garlic into the sambal-beef mixture. Stir the mixture one last time and cover the bowl. I set the bowl in the refrigerator and left this to marinate until the next night.

Following the cooking directions, I put the meat mixture into a pan and sprinkled flour on top. I was supposed to stir this first, but didn’t follow the directions very thoroughly. I poured the water on top of the mixture and started stirring. It all worked out in the end.

Bringing the mixture to boiling, the flour thickens as the water is cooked away. The beef cooks in the liquid, helping to tenderize the beef. Once it came to a boil, I turned the heat down and simmered for 25 minutes.

The final product was a thick sauce with tender bits of beef and onion. This is my only shot of the final dish, so this will have to do. We ate this beef the next night with some leftover rice, but I forgot to take a picture of it.
